Evgeni Malkin blamed for Pittsburgh Penguins OT loss

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins suffered their fifth overtime loss of the season, heading into the Christmas break with just one point in the standings.

It was once again a close game between the Penguins and the Carolina Hurricanes; their third meeting of the season and the third time games were separated by a single goal.

When a game ends in overtime, most often the team that makes the first mistake loses.

That was pretty clearly the case for the Penguins, and Evgeni Malkin took full responsibility for the error.

“It’s 100% my fault,” Malkin said after the game. “I tried to catch him behind the net and lost my advantage a bit.”

It was in the opening seconds of overtime when Malkin tried to chase down Jaccob Slavin, who managed to use his free break to win the game.

“Maybe don’t go behind the net,” Malkin said. “It’s a lesson for me. Next time I will play better.

The Penguins have been pretty brutal in overtime this season with just one overtime win; their second overtime winner came in a shootout.

Mike Sullivan said after the game that the team needed to do better in overtime and bring Malkin’s accident to light.

“You just can’t chase behind the net,” Sullivan said. “If you chase behind the net, it’s an automatic 3v2 the other way.”

Malkin’s pursuit not only turned into a free 3-2, but was capitalized for the match winner just 23 seconds into the game.

It was a tough way to end a game that could easily have gone in Pittsburgh’s favor, but Malkin acknowledges it was his mistake.

The Penguins need to improve their game in overtime and take advantage of the skills they have.
