The US Senate passed a $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill on Thursday to avoid a midnight Friday government shutdown deadline.
The passage of the bills comes after a chaotic week, including an address to Congress from Ukraine’s president, a wave of opposition from some Republicans and impending winter storms that could leave travelers stranded over the Christmas holidays.
We STILL don’t know the true cost of the $1.7 billion omnibus, U.S. Rep. Ben Cline, R-Va., wrote on Twitter. As far as we know, the total price could exceed $2 billion. Democrats want a blank check to spend YOUR taxpayer dollars.
The vote was 68 to 29, with nearly 20 Republican senators voting in favor of the legislation, which would fund the government until September. Now the bill is heading to the US House, where Republicans have strongly opposed but likely lack the votes to stop the legislation.
We hope that if it was completed this afternoon, it would take about five hours to get the bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Thursday shortly before the Senate vote. Wed go to the rules. We could skip it tonight. That would be our hope. We want people to be able to get home, and as you know, there are storms all over America, and hopefully that will motivate an expedited discussion there.
Opposing Republicans pushed for a temporary funding measure that would keep the federal government on schedule until the new Congress takes over in the new year.
The $1.7 trillion omnibus would funnel BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars to wake up pet projects from members like AOC and Hakeem Jeffries, U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, wrote on Twitter, adding that ‘There will be millions of taxpayer dollars for LGBT groups peddling radical gender ideology.
U.S. Senator Mike Lee, R-Utah, rallied support for an amendment pursuing Title 42. This public health authority allows border agents to expedite the deportation of illegal immigrants to prevent the spread of COVID. Lee said he had the votes, but Democratic leader Sen. Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., called a recess and withdrew the votes he needed.
The amendment saving Title 42 had the votes to pass, with all GOPs plus [Joe] Manchin and [Kyrsten] Sinema, he said. Schumer then paused the vote clock and twisted his arms until both voted. [and] the amendment failed. All Republicans who previously supported this awful omnibus should now oppose it.
The omnibus is terrible in itself, he added. It is intolerable with this development. No Republican should support him.
U.S. Representative Dan Bishop, RN.C., has gone viral for a Twitter thread highlighting the most egregious provisions of the bill, which includes a series of photos of the text of the legislation that was even retweeted by the billionaire and landlord from Twitter, Elon Musk.
Others joined in, exposing line after line of controversial spending items in the several thousand pages of spending, or 12 supply bills in one.
On a more sinister note, here’s at least $575 million for “family planning” in areas where population growth threatens biodiversity, he wrote earlier this week. Malthusianism is a disturbing, anti-human ideology that should have no place in any federal agenda.
