Archbishop of Canterbury sticks to criticism of government migration policy

The Archbishop of Canterbury said he would continue to speak out against the government’s migration policy as he denied personally attacking the Home Secretary.

Justin Welby has come under fire from Tory MP Jonathan Gullis after he used a speech in the House of Lords to rebuke the government’s immigration policy and predicted the Rwandan scheme was doomed.

In an extensive interview with Channel 4 News, the Archbishop denied personally attacking Suella Braverman, saying he would continue to air his views on what he called a moral issue.

Everything is a political question. I mean absolutely everything, he said.

He denied using his speech to attack Ms Braverman, saying: I never put the Home Secretary.

I’m talking about politics, not people. It would be a welcome change from a lot of politics.

The Archbishop used his address to the Lords to warn that scrutiny has become cruelty while asserting that the Rwandan project would fail.

He refused to back down or back down, after he was told the High Court had ruled the controversial policy legal.

The Archbishop told the show that he would continue to speak out on the issue of migration and asylum policy, adding that he was not mistaken in his views on the plan.

Absolutely not.

We never said it was legal or illegal. We said it was wrong. Something can be legal and still wrong.

I don’t think it will be a success for many reasons, the Archbishop said.

Earlier this week, Ms Braverman said she had pledged to send migrants to Rwanda as soon as possible after the High Court ruling, but Downing Street admitted it was impossible to say when the flights might take off while the threat of further legal action remained.
