Canadian musician/producer Devin Townsend has once again reiterated that he has no interest in reforming STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, the flagship industrial metal band he fronted until 2007. repeatedly asked Townsend if he would reform STRAPPING, to name only the mental and physical toll the band took on him, in addition to his desire for new musical pursuits.
Speaking to AndrewHaug.com in Australia, Devin was asked how he felt when people wanted “angry old Townsend back”. He replied (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “It’s confusing. I can explain it until I’m blue-faced and people are like, ‘Yeah, cool. Anyway, can you do it?” I think it’s good for me to try to work on my patience, because there’s a part of that, like, ‘Really? You think is it so easy?’ I know why they want it I love it too I love it but I can’t do it.
“I said the other day in an interview, and it was an analogy that I thought was really cool. So you go to a smorgasbord, you go to an all-you-can-eat buffet, and you go to this place because they have that type of shrimp, or whatever, it’s like the shit’s fried, it’s got a spicy sauce,” he continued. “And you know that’s the place, and you go there and you take a big plate of it and you eat it. And you’re like, ‘This is my favorite thing in the world.’ And you come back and it’s over; the restaurant is empty. And you say, “When are you bringing out more shrimp?” And they’re, like, ‘We ran out of shrimp. The ingredients we had to create this dish, we don’t have anymore.’ And instead of going, like, ‘Oh, I get it. It’s a disappointment. OK cool. re, like, ‘Ah, I want shrimp. More. I want more prawns.’ And [the restaurant says], ‘But, man, I’m out of shrimp.’ It’s, like, ‘But shrimp’
“The well is drying up. There’s no more water in the well. It seems absurd to me to yell at the well. It’s like, ‘Dude, there’s no more water in there. .I know you like it.’ But the thing that made it authentic, the process that made it important resolved what made it so vital.
“I don’t blame people for wanting it, and I don’t blame people for not understanding it either,” Devin added. “What I have to do is it’s up to me to make peace with this. Because otherwise I’m screaming at the well, I’m screaming at the shrimp board. I’m like, ‘Why don’t you understand? ?’ And they say, ‘Why aren’t there more shrimp?’ And then it becomes this weird argument about something that’s completely irrational, “Man, there’s no more shrimp, and I know you want shrimp. Are you OK ? Goodbye.” That’s all there is to it. And I think for me, making peace with people not going to understand is a big part of my process, man.
When host Andrew Haug noted that Townsend made no apologies for not being able to create new STRAPPING YOUNG LAD music, Devin said, “You can’t. Shrimp. Sorry.'”
Townsend previously addressed his failure to reform STRAPPING YOUNG LAD earlier in the month in an interview with The Metal Meltdown. When asked if there was a chance he would do another STRAPPING YOUNG LAD album, he replied, “The answer to that is I’ve said it a thousand times, so I’m sure it’s ‘there are people who really don’t know, they don’t care enough to pay attention.
“I understand the question, and I understand why I’m really being asked that question,” he continued. “But I have to be careful with the answer because you don’t want to. I think it’s easy to get so irritated with the question that you end up being flippant about it, and you end up insulting people when the question comes from a place where people really like it and they really want it.
“So I’ll say this: The same thing that made STRAPPING work so well when I was 25, whether or not you think ‘Lightwork’ is worth shit or ‘The Puzzle’ is worth shit, that’s is the same process. the same thing that gave this is the same thing that gave this. And the only reason STRAPPING existed back then was because I was true to myself. is the only reason, because at the time it was my truth.
“The process of creating this music is rooted in trying to get high as I got older, because when I was younger I had a lot of issues,” Devin explained. “So if people really like something that happened at any point in my career, whether or not it was ‘Empath’ or STRAPPING or ‘Ziltoid’ or ‘Epicloud’ or whatever, then I hope they understand that the thing they probably appreciated about it is that it comes from a place of honesty And if I can’t be honest about something, the thing that people will love about it won’t be there. Absolutely. And I’d rather be hated for what I am than be loved for what I’m not anymore.
“STRAPPING is a huge part of my life was a huge part of my life and I love all of these guys and always talk to them,” Devin clarified. “However, the nature of what I did meant that the lessons I needed to learn from that period of my life were reflected in the content. And now it’s not part of my life. in a way that I can relate to, and more so, it’s not part of my life in a way that I have the slightest desire to go back to.
“There’s going to be a number of people who would hear that and they’d be like, ‘Yeah, he already said that. I understand. I like the group, but I understand. I can respect that. There’s going to be a number of people who are just going, “Fuck that guy. What he gotta do is do this because it’s the only thing he’s ever done that’s worth doing. and everything else sucks.” and there will be another part that just says, ‘STRAPPING who?’ But for me, bro, I’m just, like as hard as it is to say, because it’s been such a weird couple of years, I’m pretty happy with where I’m at as a guy, and it’s not worth sacrificing to go back to a time when I wasn’t happy.”
STRAPPING YOUNG LAD’s last studio album, “The New Black”, was released in 2006 via Century Media.
