Today’s poll in The Independent makes extremely unpleasant reading for the Prime Minister. Rishi Sunak already faces an extraordinarily long list of enormous, arguably unsolvable problems. Striking workers have historically ridden to the accidental rescue of Tory governments or helped bring down Labor governments, while easy politics has allowed Tories to blame industrial action on hardline union officials and, by association, the Labour Party.
It would be bad enough for Rishi Sunak if the public simply blamed the government, rather than the Labor Party, for the ongoing strike over the Christmas period, but the reality is worse. The public supports the strikers.
A Savanta poll found almost two in three voters (63%) would back NHS nurses who go on strike more next year if their wage demands are not met. In the private sector, the strike aims to force the bosses to improve wages and conditions by harming their business. In the public sector, NHS staff are voting to temporarily worsen public services, and the public clearly supports them.
