We don’t know what resolutions, if any, Capitol Hill pols are jotting down as New Years approaches. .
But we have a few lawmakers could do — if not to improve themselves, at least to improve the lives of Americans.
First, quit the blame game. When migrant buses were dropped off at Vice President Harriss’ Washington, DC residence on Christmas Eve, Democrats went ballistic. It was the fault of the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, it was cruel, it was very cold, the migrants had to be given blankets.
But it was also very cold in Texas, and the migrants, not dressed for the weather, had trouble keeping warm. El Paso, which declared a state of emergency due to the influx of migrants, rushed to find beds and open emergency shelters.
Here’s the thing – not all immigrants can stay in federally funded shelters. Only those with immigration papers after going to Border Patrol are allowed in. It’s a federal policy, the city says, because the government helps pay for these shelters. And there are only a limited number of charities setting up makeshift shelters for everyone.
Instead of blaming Abbott when the immigration crisis spreads from Texas to DC’s Tony neighborhoods, Democrats on Capitol Hill can work to get the crisis under control — and that takes more than saying ‘don’t come here’ while working to end title 42.
And if the problems aren’t the GOP’s fault, then they’re Vladimir Putin’s, whom President Biden has blamed for inflation.
“Today’s inflation report confirms what Americans already know. Putin’s price hike is hitting America hard,” Biden said earlier this year.
Although Putin’s war in Ukraine played a particular role in oil price increases, this is not definitive proof. Prices were skyrocketing months before Russia sent the tanks. And if Biden had turned the tap back on in terms of US oil production, that would have gone a long way in mitigating the sticker shock at the pumps.
While Democrats blame everyone under the sun — except themselves — for the country’s problems, their penchant for spending taxpayers’ money continues unabated. And not just the $1.7 trillion omnibus bill to keep government running for another year, but bailouts for favored groups.
The high cost of college tuition was a hot topic this year, and instead of calling universities for inflated tuition and fees, student loan debt was seen as a crisis that required action ( expensive).
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who blames corporations for “pricing up” the rate of inflation into the stratosphere, does not hold colleges in the same contempt. For her, and other like-minded progressives, the way to deal with the exorbitant costs of a college education is to have the federal government foot the bill. And when we say federal, we mean the American taxpayer.
Coming to terms with owning your own mistakes and working to correct them can be a difficult task for DC pols. But we would be happy if they chose to show some respect in 2023.
Not just for those with opposing views, but for the respect of their constituents.
We, the people, who pay for their mistakes.
