Texas Tech player denies Lane Kiffin’s allegation that he spat at Ole Miss player

Texas Tech and linebacker Dimitri Moore have denied Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffins’ accusation after the Texas Bowl that Moore spat at an Ole Miss player.

A fourth-quarter skirmish after a fumble in the Texas Techs’ 42-25 win resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for Ole Miss wide receiver Jordan Watkins. Kiffin said after the game that the penalty should have been on No. 11 for Texas Tech and not his team’s No. 11 and that Ole Miss offensive lineman Jayden Williams was spat on.

Moore wears No. 11 at Texas Tech. Kiffin also said a racial slur was used in the skirmish. Moore and Williams are black.

There’s this big fight and they were yelling at our players and their coaches take their number 11 off the pitch yelling at him because he spat on our player, Kiffin said in his post-game press conference . And so the side judge on my side says to me, hey their 11 and he’s actually pointing that way their 11 is going to get kicked out. Your 71 hit back and he’s also going to get a penalty. So I’m OK.

And then suddenly they announce our 11. Our 11 is Jordan Watkins who was not in the fight. It was their 11 fight 71 that everyone knew because their own coaches were yelling at the guy. There was a racial slur involved, that’s not the point of what the spitting part was about and the sentence that was said. And so if you look at him, I brought our own 71 to the officials and I said Right or wrong, do you see him cry? He’s not crying because he spat on it, he cries because he got spat on and said something. So it made no sense.

You can listen to Kiffins’ full quote on the incident below.

On Thursday afternoon, Texas Tech released statements from Coach Joey McGuire and Moore denying Kiffins’ accusations of spitting and using racial slurs.

I cannot say strongly enough that these accusations are false, Moore said. It is disappointing to see my last game as a college student-athlete overshadowed by the false accusations that were made last night. Since coming to Texas Tech, I have strived to represent my teammates, this coaching staff, and most importantly, my family, in the highest possible way. It was an honor to represent this program as we capped off our season with a great team win last night.

McGuire supported Moores’ statement and said the linebacker denied the allegations during a discussion between the two.

We are disappointed that an opposing head coach has decided to insinuate serious false and irresponsible allegations, McGuire said. I discussed these allegations with Dimitri Moore and he disputed the two complaints that were brought against him. I’m proud of our team and our performance last night in what was a momentous win to close out our season in front of a sea of Red Raiders.

Tech led 26-7 at halftime and easily held the lead in the second half as Ole Miss turned the ball over five times and failed five times. Texas Tech was five of six on fourth down as the two teams combined to go 13 times on fourth down just four field goal attempts and two punts.
