Former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has doubled down on her efforts to ignore former President Donald Trump’s racist nickname, this time discouraging the media from repeating it.
Trump made headlines in October after he used the offensive nickname to refer to Chao in a social truth rant against her husband, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). During a posting frenzy on Wednesday, the former president used the moniker again while calling her the China-loving wife of McConnells.
In a new interview with CNN, Taiwanese-born Chao said it would be very helpful if the media didn’t repeat this racist tweet.

If it was the N-word, or any other word, the media wouldn’t repeat it, Chao said. But the media constantly repeat his racist taunts. And so, he tries to excite us. He says all kinds of outrageous things, and I don’t make it a point to answer any of them.
Chao declined to comment on the racist moniker on at least two occasions. On a recent visit to San Francisco’s Chinatown, she dodged questions about it and instead urged her fellow Asian Americans to be proud of our heritage because America is now more diverse.
Chao, 69, was the first cabinet member to resign following the invasion of the Capitol on Jan. 6. She described the events as shocking and something I couldn’t put aside.

In addition to being a collateral target in Trump’s anti-McConnell messaging, Chao has also been the target of direct attacks from his former boss. In August, Trump called her crazy and accused her family of working to get rich in China, fueling speculation about the extent of her involvement in the family business, the US shipping company Foremost Group, which reportedly mainly operates in China.
