It stinks Ferdinand slams fans’ double standards, experts on Ronaldo criticism

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand says people are more than happy to see many players ‘throwing the shot’ in America as he defends Cristiano Ronaldo after his move to Al-Nassr.

The Portugal international completed his move to the Saudi outfit on Friday, with Ronaldo signing a lucrative deal until 2025.

A statement from Al-Nassr said Ronaldo had “expressed his eagerness to experience a new football league in a different country”, and added quotes from the player who said: “The vision with which Al Nassr is very inspiring and I’m excited to join my teammates in helping the team together achieve more success.

However, Ronaldo has been criticized by some on social media for going to Al-Nassr for the money with reports he could earn up to $200m a year in Saudi Arabia.

Reports from the summer had claimed that Ronaldo was trying to get away from Old Trafford as he sought to play in the Champions League, while Ronaldo himself had said in a controversial interview with Piers Morgan that he wanted continue to play at the highest level.

Reacting to the news, Ferdinand told his YouTube channel Vibe with Five: “I am delighted for him that he is finally happy. For any footballer at any level, happiness and being happy in the environment in which he plays is one of the most important things.

“He hasn’t been happy for a while, so I’m glad he’s on the verge of finding that happiness, albeit in a country where few expected him to go.

“But what a prospect it is, what an adventure it is for him to go to Arabia to go and play in a whole new league, a competitive league there for that matter.

“I watched people comment and a few pundits saying it was a sad way for him to go out. The only sadness is how it ended at Manchester United. I think looking back, in a few years the hell looks back and thinks it could have been handled differently.

The story continues

“But this next chapter, going to Arabia. How is that a sad way to end your career? I don’t understand how people say that.

And Ferdinand was annoyed by the ‘irrelevant’ criticism directed at Ronaldo over his choice of country to play in.

Former Man Utd defender Ferdinand added: “It was great to see David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, it was great to see them go to America.

“What a way to end their career, to make a lot of money, to go to a league that’s not as competitive, to let them go, they’ve earned it, they’ve earned the right.

“That’s all I’ve seen in the media. But because it’s Saudi Arabia, it’s sad, it’s a shame. Let a man go and live, let a man go and live. It’s a new adventure that he takes his family to discover a new culture.

“Every country in the world has its problems. America has fewer problems than a place like Saudi Arabia? It’s good for all these players to go to America, Bastian Schweinsteiger, etc.

“Let them go to the United States and have a swansong year and just throw it all away. It stinks not to hear this kind of talk. It’s out of order.

“Every other player who went to a less competitive league to end their career was told you earned the right. No man on the planet would have earned the right more than this guy.
