The 1990s brought some of the most iconic and memorable pop music in recent history and launched the careers of many who are still in the media and on the lips of fans around the world. There was *NSYNC, which helped launch Justin Timberlake to super stardom, Christina Aguilera, the Spice Girls, Britney Spears and 98 Degrees, all of which were on magazines, posters, radios and TV screens everywhere. The band hails from Orlando, Florida and was formed by Lou Pearlman in 1993 and consisted of Brian Littrell, Kevin Richardson, Howie Dorough, AJ McLean and Nick Carter.

The group have become the best-selling boy band of all time since their debut in 1996 and continue to have a strong fanbase and tour with their five original members. However, like anyone in the limelight, the band has faced fierce controversy and allegations against perhaps its most prominent member, Nick Carter.

This isn’t the first time he’s been charged with sexual assault.

Fans of ’90s boy bands will recall that Nick Carter was linked to many female celebrities at the time, but not all of his encounters made headlines.

A former pop star who was on the scene around the same time as the Backstreet Boys had previously accused Nick Carter of sexual assault. Melissa Schuman, formerly of 1990s girl group Dream, was 18 when she claims she had her experience with Nick Carter.

In a now-deleted blog post, Schuman detailed her experience with Carter, who was around 22 at the time of the alleged encounter, saying she was forced to perform intimate acts on Carter against her will, and that she had also done things against her. his will.

She goes on to reveal a few more details about the situation, like how taller and stronger he was compared to her, and how it happened in a bathroom and then a bedroom. Schuman was incredibly upset, admitting she planned to run away for the wedding.

Nick Carter vehemently denied the charges at the time and released a statement in which he said: “Melissa never spoke to me while we were together or at any time because anything we did was not consensual.”

Unfortunately for Schuman, the statute of limitations was passed in 2013 under California state law, something she said she was aware of could happen when she chose to take legal action against Carter.

The alleged victim was a minor at the time

Nick Carter faces other allegations that date back to 2001. Alleged victim Shannon “Shay” Ruth says Carter sexually assaulted her and infected her with HPV when she was 17.

Shay says his meeting happened in Tacoma, Washington, after attending a Backstreet Boys concert. She alleges that Nick Carter invited her onto his tour bus while she was waiting for an autograph.

The allegations went on to say that Carter gave Shay “a fun-tasting drink he called VIP juice” and then took her to the bathroom where he allegedly exposed himself to her and ordered her to perform intimate acts on him.

From there, Carter allegedly took her to bed and continued to assault her, also mirroring the allegations Schuman made against Carter. When Shay told Nick Carter that she would tell people what happened to her, he allegedly started yelling at her and calling her names.

Shay filed a lawsuit against Nick Carter, claiming she was doing it to “stop Nick Carter from molesting more teenagers and women.”

Carter’s legal team denied the charges, calling them “legally baseless but also totally false.”

Although no evidence has come to light against Nick Carter regarding these accusations, the effects of the situation are already being felt by him and the rest of the members of the Backstreet Boys, with ABC pulling their special A Very Backstreet Holiday from viewing, opting instead to show comedy reruns.

Controversy divides fans

With little beyond verbal accusations, fans of Nick Carter and the Backstreet Boys are understandably treading lightly on the subject until more details come out.

Even still, some have already begun to choose sides in the situation.

Other Redditors have made a point of talking about content creators, like Sloan, covering up the allegations. According to user Fluffy-Carrot-5432, these content creators’ fan base not only harasses them, but also Nick Carter and his wife Lauren.

And of course, Carter has plenty of supporters who absolutely don’t believe the charges against him and are upset that the Christmas special was canceled with no further evidence against Nick. For the moment, it seems that the majority is waiting to see if it can go to trial.
