Trump blames GOP midterm losses on ‘abortion problem’, Mitch McConnell

Former President Donald Trump has blamed Republicans’ disappointing midterm performance on abortion and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Following the absence of a “red wave” in November, some Republican figures blamed Trump, saying it was his presence that turned voters away. Trump has refuted the charges since November, but gave his most blunt answer regarding accountability in a Truth Social article on Sunday. The former president claimed that some Republican candidates had “mishandled” the “abortion issue” and McConnell’s wasteful spending were the two key factors that led to lackluster mid-runs.

Some conservative analysts have made similar claims; a report by Heritage Action found abortion to be a major issue that caused Republican losses, but only because Democrats were able to control the narrative around the issue by spending 45 times more than Republicans. Similarly, the questionable fundraising practices of Mitch McConnell’s Republican Party have not properly countered Democratic messages on topics such as abortion.
