Former Manchester United teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo, Rio Ferdinand has openly lambasted the criticism that has been leveled at the Portuguese. Ferdinand has defended Ronaldo’s move to the Saudi club by comparing it to the moves of his former colleagues Wayne Rooney and David Beckham to MLS. (More football news)

“It was great to see David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, it was great to see them go to America,” Ferdinand said on his Vibe with FIVE podcast. “What a way to end their career, to make a lot of money, to go to a league that’s not as competitive, they’ve earned it, they’ve earned the right.”

He adds: “That’s all I’ve seen in the media. But because it’s Saudi Arabia, it’s a shame, it’s sad. To let a man go to live, to let a man go and enjoy it. It’s a new adventure that he’s taking his family on.” a new culture.”

Ronaldo joined Saudi side Al-Nassr in a sensational £175million-a-year deal following his tumultuous exit from Manchester United in November.

Ronaldo had been a free agent after his contract was terminated by Manchester United following an explosive TV interview in which he criticized manager Erik ten Hag and the club’s owners after being repeatedly benched and even temporarily suspended by the club.

Ronaldo said in a statement that he was “looking forward to experiencing a new football league in another country”.

“I’m lucky to have won everything I wanted to win in European football and now I feel like it’s the right time to share my experience in Asia,” added the striker.

He is also coming off a disappointing World Cup where he was benched in the round of 16 and left the pitch in tears after Portugal’s quarter-final loss to Morocco.
