Khabib Nurmagomedov’s promotion, Eagle FC, held its last event on American soil in Miami, Florida on May 20, 2022. Since then, the promotion has only held events in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan without any mention future projects in America. MMA fans conspired that the promotion’s absence in the United States was due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
A week has passed since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.
Our defenders are ready to face the enemy. All fighters have a fighting spirit and a strong desire to destroy the occupiers. Everything will be Ukraine!

Khabib Nurmagomedov acquired Russian MMA promotion Gorilla Fighting Championship (formerly known as Samara MMA Federation) and renamed it Eagle Fighting Championship (EFC) in November 2020 for $1 million. The fact that Nurmagomedov once publicly stated that gaining popularity in the United States is crucial to rising to the top adds to the puzzle surrounding why the promotion does not host American events.

James Lynch, an MMA reporter, explored the hot topic of the conversation on his YouTube channel. He referred to statements by Kevin Lee and Yorgan De Castro that cast doubt on the organization’s future goals in the United States.
Watch the video below:
Several MMA fans commented on the YouTube video with their suspicions about what could have turned the organization around. One fan speculated that the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine might be the reason they haven’t returned to action in the US:
“A combination of things. The war makes it harder for fighters to get visas. Khabib’s coaching career takes longer, Islam and Usman win the title, JDS gets injured and Fedor’s fight fails. I I agree it’s weird, hopefully we’ll get an update soon.”
Another fan speculated that Eagle FC may be a money laundering scheme, although there is no substantial evidence to support these claims:
“Money laundering has been difficult with so much control over mma. Considering Eagle FC is more of a money laundering business than an MMA promotion, they haven’t been able to do as much in the west .”
Another fan noted that the escalating crisis, bankruptcy and unauthorized transactions of FTX Trading Ltd. could be related to the interruption of the promotion. Eagle FC’s first two events were held at the FTX Arena in Miami:
“FTX was the title sponsor there and after all the debacle FTX has been through this year, it’s no surprise that they had to drop the US events because the necessary funds were no longer available.”

Chael Sonnen suggests Eagle FC star to face Shavkat Rakhmonov
Shavkat Rakhmonov suffered a major setback when Geoff Neal was forced to pull out of their impending fight at UFC 67 in Las Vegas.
Bryan Barberena offered to step in as a replacement, but the UFC declined. Chael Sonnen acted as matchmaker and named Kevin Lee as a viable option to face Rakhmonov. Lee signed with Eagle FC on December 15, 2021 and fought for promotion once.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Sonnen said:
“If Kevin Lee is ready to go out there and fight Rakhmonov and nobody else is, I hope he’s considered for that opportunity. I think that’s an interesting proposition. I don’t know if there’s a better idea I don’t know that by the time I make this piece and get it to you or even by the time the event is in a few weeks I don’t know if Rakhmonov will stay on the card because I don’t know of a guy I can think of who would step in and face him.”
