La Liga have filed charges regarding the racist abuse of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior during their game against Real Valladolid last Friday.
The league also says it will increase the number of integrity officers present at matches where there is a risk of racial slurs will be increased and messages will be broadcast in stadiums where it is considered there is a risk of possible racist behavior in the stands.
Vinicius Jr, 22, has called La Liga out for a perceived lack of action in the fight against racism after the Valladolid game, saying it continues to do nothing, a claim that the organization and its president, Javier Tebas, have firmly refuted.
Friday’s game was not the first time Vinicius Jr has been the subject of racist abuse in Spain this season, with the Madrid derby in September among other instances where the Brazil international has been targeted by rival fans .
La Liga now say they identified racial slurs directed at Vinicius Jr that were posted online during the Valladolid game and reported them to the relevant authorities.
In a statement released on Tuesday, La Liga said: A criminal charge for hate crimes has been filed with the Valladolid Magistrates’ Courts, supported by audiovisual evidence collected as part of the investigation carried out through images and audio clips published on open sources.
LaLiga also asked the Valladolid Magistrates’ Courts to transfer the complaint to the Hate Crimes Prosecutor’s Office so that they can participate in the case.
In addition, and as has been the case for several seasons, a report of racist insults has been filed with the RFEF Competition Commission and the State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and intolerance in sport, to be studied and evaluated with a view to a sanction. .
La Liga says it will also step up its ongoing efforts to eradicate any form of violence, racism or xenophobia inside and outside stadiums.
As a result, the number of LaLiga Integrity Officers present at matches where there is a risk of racial slurs will be increased, the statement continued, in order to maximize the detection and identification of this type of behavior, which has no place in sports.
In addition, in stadiums where it is considered that there is a risk of possible racist behavior in the stands, messages will be broadcast on the public address system and the advertising boards surrounding the pitch to combat and condemn racism.
When Vinicius Jr was the target of racist insults from Atletico Madrid fans in September, La Liga again reported the incidents to the prosecutor’s office in the Spanish capital. However, no action was taken.
The prosecutor’s office said the chants were inappropriate and disrespectful, but also said the context was important, likened them to teasing in a highly competitive atmosphere, and also said they lasted only a few seconds. .
