SCARBOROUGHSNational League North’s clash with Darlington has been delayed by almost 40 minutes amid abuse allegations against a female official.
The game, which the Quakers eventually won 5-2 at Scarborough Sports Village to return to the top of the table, started at 1 p.m. but did not end until around 3:40 p.m. after a 38-minute second-half suspension.
An announcement warning spectators of abusive language was made over the public address system after a brief first-half stoppage following a conversation between the referee and the assistant, listed as Dean Watson and the assistant Emily Carney.
Darlington then issued an appeal for witnesses following an allegation of misogynistic remarks from the visitors’ section.
A statement on the club’s website, published at half-time, read: During the first half of the game at Scarborough, the assistant was the subject of alleged misogynistic remarks from one or two fans of Darlington.
Darlington FC unreservedly condemns such conduct, and so if you have witnessed these incidents and can help identify the culprits, please email [email protected] in the strictest confidentiality.
Shortly after Jacob Hazel put the Quakers up 3-0 with his second goal nine minutes into the second half, the game was again called off with further problems.
Darlington added to the statement on his website later Monday night, saying: There was a subsequent incident after half-time, allegedly involving Scarborough fans, which resulted in a 30-minute delay.
Darlington FC also condemns this incident and encourages any eyewitnesses to come forward in the strictest confidence.
Both clubs have been contacted for comment, with a Darlington spokesperson telling the PA news agency: were investigating.
A message on the Scarboroughs Twitter account read: We would like to emphasize that discriminatory language of any kind will not be tolerated. Please respect match officials, players and other supporters.
Both groups of players returned to warm up after a break of around 28 minutes, with play resuming 10 minutes later.
Mark Beck, who had opened the scoring, made it 4-0 and Jack Lambert added a fifth before Michael Coulson struck twice from the death to reduce the deficit.
