Canadian presenter Tess van Straaten applauds after being shamed for wearing a sleeveless dress via Twitter/ @tessvanstraaten
Tess van Straaten hits back at critics over her ‘inappropriate’ dress.
On Sunday, the Canadian news presenter took to Twitter to hit back after he was shamed for wearing a sleeveless dress on air. The BC-based news anchor shared a photo of the negative comments she received alongside a photo of the “inappropriate” dress in question.
“I find it inappropriate that Tess van Straaten still wears sleeveless tops in the winter to report on the weather,” the commenter wrote. “In my opinion, she should wear a suit jacket and look more professional than other news anchors around the world. Sorry for the negative comment, but it’s almost heartbreaking to see what she’s wearing.”
“This is what women in broadcasting unfortunately still face in 2023,” Van Straaten applauded. “Do you think my dress is ‘almost earth-shattering’?”
The CHEK News personality doubled down in a second tweet, explaining that while she “used to ignore comments like this,” she recently “decided to start calling them.”
“We need to stand up and speak out for things to change. It’s really heartbreaking to see what women in other parts of the world are facing,” she added. “I really have no words.”
Van Straaten’s tweets quickly won support from fans who assured him that his outfit was far from inappropriate.
“That’s a pretty dress and that person doesn’t have enough to worry about in their life if they’re still fired up about what a woman is doing her job,” one person tweeted, to which van Straaten replied:
“I had planned to wear a blazer today but after this email I think I might go sleeveless because I don’t want them to think it impacted my choice of wardrobe !”
“You are such a professional, and your arms shouldn’t even be part of the conversation,” another wrote.
The story continues
“It’s sad and ridiculous that people think it’s appropriate to comment on your clothing choice like that,” someone else wrote. “You always look laid back and professional to me.”
“Men are generally not criticized for their clothes in different public situations,” one Twitter user pointed out. “Your dress is tasteful. Great design. Appropriate.”
It’s not the first time a woman in broadcasting has been ridiculed for her on-air appearance.
In 2019, the Canadian meteorologist hit back at critics who shamed her.
And last year, Good Morning America meteorologist Ginger Zee slammed a troll who said she dressed “like a prostitute”.
