Fans and analysts alike held the Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff accountable after the team’s second straight loss clouded the outcome of a once excellent season.
Within the walls of the organization, it is the head coach who takes responsibility.
“We weren’t good enough coaches. We haven’t put the guys in good enough positions to make plays. When you score 10 points there is a lot of blame to be had and it starts with me. We haven’t put the guys in good enough places to help them make plays and we need to do a better job of that. Head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters Monday after the Eagles’ 20-10 loss to New Orleans.
Eagles collapsing?
Part of the team’s recent struggles have been a series of injuries that have plagued the entire roster, from Lane Johnson to Josh Sweat to franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts. While injury updates weren’t made during Monday afternoon’s presser, it looks like the Eagles are closer to seeing, at a minimum, their starting quarterback return to action next week against the Eagles. Giants.
“Jalen did all the rehab. He’s still working in there… Obviously we’re just waiting to see how they feel, keep going through the week, to see what their status will be for that week. Sirianni said comparing Hurts’ two injuries to the one suffered by Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.
Injuries aren’t the only concern in the Eagles locker room. With Jalen Hurts sidelined the past two weeks with a shoulder injury, Gardner Minshew failed to lead the Eagles to a division title or an NFC playoff seed. .
Heading for their third consecutive try in both the division and the conference, the Eagles understand that it’s not just the quarterback who is at fault. Even though his last pick of six ended the Eagles’ hopes of a comeback on Sunday.
“[Offensive Coordinator] Shane [Steichen] and I watched it together this morning, as we watched it as a team, we just thought, Hey, this is too recognizable a lineup to go back to. If we go back to that recognizable formation like that, we have to do something else potentially from there. That’s what we said. »
Sirianni added later. “We said, Hey, it’s on us. Just like what I told you, this is where the responsibility begins. The responsibility doesn’t start with us as coaches telling the players, this is what you need to do better. That’s part of it, but the responsibility is that everyone looks in the mirror and says, I screwed this up.
Always under control
All eyes will now be on the Giants setting their starters in their Week 18 game against Philadelphia. New York has already clinched a playoff berth and is locked in the sixth seed in the playoffs. With little to play for, there’s a chance the Eagles could get third stringers from the G-Men on Sunday.
But that’s not a goal that the coaching staff focus on.
“I can’t anticipate the Giants. Again, I can only control what I can control. That’s always been my message to the team: control what you can control and spend your mental energy on things that are worth your mental energy. Siriani said.
Philadelphia desperately needs a win. As crazy as it sounds to think about how we got here after a 13-1 start, the Eagles coaches are taking the blame and leading the charge in next Sunday’s must-see affair.
