Robin Williams’ most critically acclaimed film, Old Dogs, is by far the worst late-star film according to critics.

Robin Williams’ worst movie, according to Rotten Tomatoes reviews, has been determined and while the results were close, the ultimate winner (loser?) is Old Dogs, his family comedy starring John Travolta. The film tells the story of two friends Dan (Williams) and Craig (Travolta) who run a successful sports marketing business, but their lives are turned upside down when Dan’s ex, from a very short marriage, returns and the surprises with a pair of twins. Through a series of sitcom-level hijinks, Dan must move into Craig’s apartment with two kids he’s never met before.
As if that surface-level description didn’t sound bad enough, Old Dogs ends up involving remote-control suits, jetpacks, a gorilla holding John Travolta hostage, and an attack of penguins. Kelly Preston, Lori Loughlin, Seth Green, Bernie Mac, Matt Dillon and the overqualified uncredited roles of Dax Shepard, Luis Guzman and Justin Long bravely attempt to make this storyline watchable alongside Robin Williams and Travolta. One of William’s children is actually played by Ella Bleu Travolta, John Travolta’s real-life daughter with Kelly Preston.
Overall, critics had nothing good to say about the film, with Roger Ebert being particularly harsh in saying “Old Dogs is astounding (sic) dumb.” What were John Travolta and Robin Williams thinking? Apparently, their agents weren’t insightful enough to sense the script in its advanced state of decay.
Although critics financially hated the film, Old Dogs was a success, with a budget of $35 million and a domestic box office of just under $50 million. Overseas, the film doubled the box office, grossing a total of $96 million, followed by another $20 million from DVD sales. So while Robin Williams had better-received films, Old Dogs is surprisingly a decent moneymaker on the late star’s resume.
A close contender to Robin Williams’ worst film, with a rotten 17% rating, is Jack, a poignant film about a child suffering from a rare disease causing him to age rapidly. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, seriously, the film was the number one surprise in its first weekend grossing $11 million. Surprisingly, before we get to Flubber, there are two other critically acclaimed films starring Aladdin star Patch Adams and Man of the Year.
Seth Green in Old Dogs
Patch Adams, starring Robin Williams as a doctor who treats his patients with humor, has developed a bizarre cult following that may or may not be partially ironic. Critics did not appreciate the plot, considering it far-fetched and insulting, with the film coming after an award-winning performance in Good Will Hunting. From 1995 to 1999, Williams brought several films to theaters, starring in most of them and supporting in the rest, which led to the star being severely overexposed and his films receiving diminishing returns.
This period nearly ended Robin Williams’ career before he turned to dramatic roles and revitalized his public persona, primarily through the indie film One-Hour Photo, the thriller Insomnia and the cult classic Death to Smoochy. The goodwill accumulated during the early period of dramatic and villainous roles was flushed down the toilet with the release of Old Dogs, making the family comedy even more disappointing than it would have been had it been released a decade later. early. So no, Flubber isn’t the star’s worst movie, as bad and disappointing as that movie is, it still doesn’t feature jetpacks, gorilla hostages and penguin attacks.
