Parenting column offers advice on not ‘raising racist children’: Learn history through ‘the lens of racism’

An education website offered some advice for parents on how to raise children properly in a recent column on how a “race-conscious parent” can avoid raising “racist children.”

The Tech Edvocate’s column, “Avoiding Raising Racist Children,” offered 4 ways “race-conscious parents” can challenge racism with their children.

The article began by advising parents to “openly discuss race, culture and history” with their children.

But that doesn’t mean any kind of discussion, the column pointed out.

“It’s critical to help your child understand history through the lens of racism,” wrote author Matthew Lynch.

The column justified teaching young children about racial ideology by claiming that the world was full of racism.

“We live in a time when racism is in the headlines, from racial killings to white supremacist rallies. As a result, many racially conscious parents are doing everything they can to raise the next generation to be and perform better. .”

The article went on to target “white parents” for evading conversations about race with their children.

“If you are a parent today, you most likely grew up in a colorblind culture. For decades, well-meaning white parents believed that avoiding discussing race was the best way to avoid raising children. They educated their children to be colorblind by not recognizing different races, but studies have found that this style of teaching is ineffective and even harmful.

The column also offered another piece of advice for parents: Don’t consume entertainment with “non-diverse characters” in front of your children.

“[I]If you exclusively watch and read articles with non-diverse characters, they may view that as racial bigotry.”

But Lynch didn’t stop there.

“Remember, you can’t encourage your child to speak out against racial injustice if you don’t mention it in the first place.”
