Racist slurs and male genitalia found spray painted on side of Central School in Maine

According to a Kennebec Journal article, police and school officials are investigating a blatant display of contempt, racism and vandalism at a school in central Maine.

The KJ reports that sometime between last Thursday evening and Friday morning, someone or persons vandalized the side of Albert S Hall School on Pleasant Street in Waterville.

Officials say that on the school side, black spray paint had been used to write the “N” word along with a set of exposed male genitalia. Someone who walks past the school frequently noticed the vandalism Friday morning and quickly reported it to school officials. At that time, school officials then notified the Waterville Police Department.

Deputy Superintendent Peter Hallen told the Kennebec Journal that former school resource officer Linda Smedberg responded to the scene. At that time, a school janitor used a tarp to cover the nearly 8-foot-long section of vandalism.

In an email sent to school teachers and students’ parents, Hallen said in part;

“While not directed at any individual and involves no threat of harm, this cowardly and racist act confronts us all and everything we commit to as a school community.”

“While removing racist graffiti has been a priority before students return to school, that does not mean we have moved on. We will not tolerate members of our community being targeted because of their identity.”

“To achieve this, we must come together as a community to speak out against hateful actions and support and embrace members of our community who are subjected to such conduct. We all encourage you to be proactive if you encounter behavior that conflicts with Maine human rights law and/or threatens your or someone else’s sense of safety.

Acting Waterville Police Chief Bill Bonney said Constable Smedburg is leading the investigation into this incident and anyone with information should contact her.
