The No. 6 Texas Longhorns suffered an ugly 116-103 loss at home to unranked Kansas State on Tuesday night to drop to 12-2. The game set a Big 12 Conference record for most combined points in a single game, which broke the record set on February 9, 2002 when the Longhorns defeated Colorado 104–95. Texas allowed 58 points in the first 20 minutes of the game, which Longhorns interim coach Rodney Terry attributed to first-half defensive lapses.
“We didn’t do a great job in the first half,” Terry said after the game. “Any time you don’t put your will to play to the level you need to play on the defensive side of the pitch in the first 20 minutes of halftime, it’s going to be really difficult for you.”
The Longhorns allowed Kansas State to shoot 60 percent from the floor. Tyrese Hunter scored a team-high 29 points for Texas and Marcus Carr added 26. Sir’Jabari Rice came off the bench and scored 16 points. Texas continues its season Saturday at Oklahoma State.
