COLUMBUS COUNTY, North Carolina Columbus County Sheriff Jody Greene resigned from his position on Wednesday, the second time he has resigned since tapes of Greene making racist statements about his employees became public.
At 11:30 a.m., District Attorney Jon David held a press conference regarding a petition for Greene’s removal and permanent disqualification. David also referenced a parallel criminal investigation related to Greene that he could not discuss.
Greene resigned at the October hearing, but was reelected a few weeks later. He was sworn in for a second term on December 29.
David filed the most recent petition within minutes of Greene being sworn in. The new petition has two sections, to remove Greene as sheriff and permanently disqualify him from holding the position in the future.
The permanent disqualification section will be decided at a later date.
County commissioners will select a replacement for Greene. Until then, the deputy chief will serve as acting sheriff.
