Province of Buenos Aires criticized for purchase of intimate lubricant Thursday, January 5, 2023 – 10:22 UTC Sotelo insisted that JxC was in when the budget was approved
Argentina’s Buenos Aires province led by Kirchnerite Axel Kicillof has authorized the disbursement of AR$500 million (approximately US$1.42 million at the unofficial exchange rate) to purchase intimate gel, drawing heavy criticism from the part of the opposition.
Although there are still malnourished children, the administration has time to allocate resources to sex issues, argued lawmakers from Together for Change (Juntos por el Cambio – JxC).
The purchase was made through the sexual health program “Haceme tuyo” (Make me yours). The provincial Minister of Health, Nicolás Kreplak, considered that the acquisition of one million jars of lubricant was justified.
According to Clarín, the initial purchase was made in October and went through five internal control agencies. However, before the end of 2022, the Ministry of Kreplak demanded a reallocation of funds to increase the number of pots, on the grounds that “the use of the lubricating gel reduces the risk of condom breakage during sexual intercourse and thus avoids sexually transmitted diseases”.
The purchase documents also stated that the use of lubricant was “a tool recommended specifically for anal sex”. The provincial authorities have also found it useful to be able to have presentations containing a greater quantity of gel (compared to the standard presentation of 2 gram sachets) in order to be able to deliver to the target population”, since “the demand for lubricant intimates the gel is not evenly distributed in the population that asks for/requests condoms.“
“Axel Kicillof’s new ‘Haceme tuyo’ program: he spent 500 million dollars to buy jars of intimate gel. Believe it or not, these are the priorities of Kirchnerism,” posted JxC deputy Diego Santilli, who intends to run for governor this year, while fellow legislator Cristian Ritondo asked the provincial government ” to stop this madness”.
Provincial Deputy Maricel Etchecoin also criticized Kicillof’s priorities “in a Province without security, with inflation, poverty, and topping”. [the number of] feminicides in the country.“
“It’s not enough for them to be the worst administration in history, but they also want to be the most ridiculous,” said MLA Alex Campbell.
However, libertarian congressman Nahuel Sotelo said JxC lawmakers were not innocent. “Today the “opposition” comes to denounce the expenses of Kicillof on an intimate freeze, but gentlemen, make no mistake about it: we were the ONLY ones to denounce these things during the vote on the budget. These expenses have been approved by Juntos por el Cambio!“
Kreplak responded via a Twitter thread. He explained that the purchase of the intimate gels is in accordance with the national law 27675 of integral response to HIV, viral hepatitis, other sexually transmitted infections and tuberculosis. He also recalled that previous JxC administrations of President Mauricio Macri and Governor María Eugenia Vidal had also made such purchases.
“We manage, respect the law and take care of our people. Purchasing prevention and sexual health care items is not something new. This has always been done and all supplies must be provided by the state. Nothing is surprising. They misinform and confuse,” Kreplak said of the opposition and insisted that the “Haceme Tuyo” program meant “savings for the state of Buenos Aires.”
“What disturbs the most is that there is a state that takes care of its people. Of all [of them]: majorities and minorities. And the opposition that obviously cares so much about the health of Buenos Aires, I invite them to discuss and vote for the health bills that they ignored for months in the Legislative Assembly, Kreplak continued.
According to health experts, using intimate gel during sex has many benefits as a tool to improve sex life and avoid sexually transmitted diseases. One of its main functions is to avoid discomfort during sexual intercourse and to make it more pleasant. Using lubricants also reduces the risk of yeast infections or urinary tract infections because the vagina is not self-lubricating like the penis.
