The family of a man who died following an altercation with guards at a Montreal prison while he was illegally detained is calling for an investigation.
Nicous D’Andre Spring, 21, died after being fitted with a balaclava and sprayed with pepper spray twice by prison guards the day after he should have been released from detention at Bordeaux prison.
The Red Coalition, a nonprofit that supports Spring’s family, said it would file a complaint with the Quebec ombudsman on behalf of the family and ask the office to open an investigation into systemic racism in the prison system.

Spring’s sister Sarafina Dennie says her brother needed mental health support but was treated by prison guards as a ‘rabid animal’.

Dennie says she’s committed to fighting for justice for her brother and making sure what happened to him doesn’t happen to anyone else.
Quebec’s Department of Public Safety called Spring’s detention “unlawful” because a judge ordered him released on December 23, but he was still behind bars the next day when he suffered injuries resulting in his death.
