‘Grotesque and racist rhetoric’: Dan Bishop defends Donalds against race-based attacks

[ad_1]

Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) defended Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) against accusations from across the aisle that Republican dissidents are using him as a ‘prop’ because he’s black, as a group of conservative Republicans rally around him in opposition to Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

In the seventh vote for president that McCarthy (R-CA) again lost, Bishop nominated Donalds to the floor, defending his ability to lead the House of Representatives. Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) tweeted Wednesday that despite being black, Donalds “perpetuates white supremacy.”

Bishop said his remarks were symptoms of a “tired, old, grotesque racist rhetoric that we’ve seen for far too long”.

“I’ve been spending a lot of time with Mr. Donalds, especially lately. He’s not a prop!” Bishop said, adding, “I know Byron is no prop. He is a man of personal conviction.”

Bishop also pointed out, “Yesterday we could have named the first black Speaker of the House of Representatives,” to which Democrats started shouting “Hakeem! Hakeem!” in support of their candidate, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who is also black.

Bush’s tweet sparked outrage on Wednesday, and it developed into a statement: My problem is not with Byron Donalds himself. My problem is not that it is black. My problem is not that he is a Republican. My problem is he wasn’t someone they had been promoting for two years.”

FWIW, @ByronDonalds is not a historic presidential candidate. It’s an accessory. Although he is black, he supports a political agenda to maintain and perpetuate white supremacy.

His name being in the mix is not progressing, it’s pathetic.

Bishop is one of 20 Republicans resisting McCarthy, but said he is not on the “Never Kevin” side which includes Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who say they won’t vote California Republican no matter what. McCarthy and his allies spent Wednesday night negotiating with members demanding more concessions on the rules, eventually offering to allow a single member to call a vote to oust the president and put Freedom Caucus members in positions keys of the committee, the main demands of its detractors.

The speaker is usually chosen in the first ballot and has not passed a ballot since 1923.
