The hive mind is a powerful thing in film criticism.
Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwans Everything Everywhwere All At Once just won another Best Picture award, this time from the North Carolina Film Critics Association.
Just in case you’re not following, Daniels’ sci-fi martial arts multiverse film won 14 Best Picture awards from regional review groups: Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles (TIE), Southeastern, Washington, Utah, St. Louis, Indiana, Dallas, North Texas, Philadelphia, North Carolina, Phoenix and Florida. No other movie even comes close to that number of wins.
Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four Best Picture awards: Chicago, Phoenix, Oklahoma and Great Western New York.
Top Gun: Maverick snagged the coveted top prize from the National Board of Reviews.
It looks like TR will only win two, although the biggest ones: New York and Los Angeles
These review groups have given the EEAO a major boost in recent weeks and many pundits believe this will result in Oscars (I’m skeptical). The EEAO remains at the top of the consensus ranking of the Gold Derbys. It’s no longer Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, which had held the top spot since its TIFF screening in September.
Some thought that Everything Everywhere being snubbed from the VFX and makeup categories would be a sign of things to come, an Academy vote rebellion against the film, but I’m not convinced on that either. The film will likely be nominated for Picture, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress, at the very least. Whether he wins in those categories remains to be seen.
