Michigan Football Violations: Jim Harbaugh Provided False or Misleading Information, Allegedly

The Michigan Wolverines appear to have Jim Harbaugh in 2023, but there could be a cloud under his leadership according to The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach.

Michigan received its Notice of Allegations from the NCAA. Four Level II violations and one Level I violation, a source confirmed to @byAustinMeek and me. Yahoo first.

The Level I violation concerns Harbaugh for “providing false or misleading information” to investigators.

In NCAA-ese, Level I violations are felonies, and obstructing an investigation is the thing Indianapolis investigators tend to hate the most. Sanctions can range from suspension to a show cause sentence, which makes anyone sanctioned persona non grata at any NCAA school except the one they currently work for for a designated period of time.

Athletics:

The school source believes that the NCAA violations are relatively minor infractions, one includes an analyst coaching players and another involves text messages that violated NCAA rules, but the investigation is pending. also focuses on program response to such violations. Three sources with knowledge of the investigation confirmed that it included self-reported violations involving an analyst coaching players on the pitch. It’s unclear what the NCAA penalty would be.

If you have an analyst coaching on a pitch, that’s not great, but if you report it yourself, there’s not much penalty. However, if you lie to investigators about it, you have a whole other set of problems. If that’s what happened here, Harbaugh could end up with the most serious crime that could hurt him personally, as well as punish the program.

Remember, the NCAA can’t really investigate NFL coaches, so if Harbaugh makes a move to the NFL like has been said, a lot of that could go away for the Wolverines. And as always with the NCAA, even under the new expedited investigation process, these things tend to take a while.
