Court orders CID to verify British citizenship claim of UK Minister of State Gamages HC – The Island

Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis yesterday ordered the CID to expeditiously obtain relevant documents relating to the alleged citizenship issue of Minister of State Diana Gamages from the British High Commission in Colombo to conduct a full investigation. .

Colombo Chief Magistrate Alwis said it would not be appropriate to issue any orders, including an order of arrest, until the court received the relevant documents from the British High Commission. He ordered the CID to obtain a report from the British High Commission on citizenship from Minister of State Gamages.

The order was issued to the CID by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court when the Ministers of State citizenship case was heard yesterday. A petition has been filed by a civil activist named Oshala Herath challenging the citizenship of Minister of State for Tourism Diana Gamage In the petition, Herath has requested a ruling that Gamage is not qualified to sit in the Sri Lankan Parliament in because of his British citizenship.

The court previously imposed a travel ban on Minister of State Gamage as part of a judicial inquiry into a complaint that she obtained a Sri Lankan passport after providing false information to the Comptroller General of Immigration and emigration.

The CID filed a B report with the Chief Magistrates Court against Gamage following a complaint that she is a British citizen residing in Sri Lanka without dual citizenship.

According to Report B filed in court, the CID said that inquiries would be made against Minister of State Gamage under Section 175 of the Penal Code for providing false information and under Sections 45(1( a) and 45(1)(c) of the Immigrants and Emigrants Act (IEA) for remaining in Sri Lanka in violation of the provision of the IEA and making a false declaration.
