NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) – New Haven officers charged in the case of a paralyzed man in police custody over the summer filed a lawsuit against responding paramedics.
Randy Cox, 36, was left paralyzed when arresting New Haven officers failed to properly secure him in the back of a transport van in June.
When an officer pressed the brakes to avoid a crash, Cox flew headfirst into the back of the doors.
Cox is suing the officers and the city for $100 million.
This new complaint seeks to add American Medical Response and their paramedics as liable parties.
The 5 agents, Agent Oscar Diaz, Agent Ronald Pressley, Agent Jocelyn Lavandier, Agent Luis Rivera and Sergeant Betsy Segui, filed a dispatch complaint.
This allows a party sued for damages to file a lawsuit against other parties, who were not previously named in the lawsuit.
The case alleges that AMR staff moved the plaintiff when they knew or should have known it was unsafe to do so.
According to officers’ arrest warrants, paramedics said Cox told them he was involved in an accident, but they did not believe Cox was involved in an accident due to the information they received from NHPD officers.
The 5 officers were recently charged with misdemeanors.
