Cleveland Browns defensive end Jadeveon Clowney will not play in Sunday’s season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers after he launched a series of criticisms of the team in an interview this week.
CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson reported on Saturday that Browns coach Kevin Stefanski informed the team that Clowney would be out after being sent home on Friday.
The three-time Pro Bowler ripped into Cleveland’s scheme and its use in an interview with Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.
“I feel like I need to be around someone who believes in me and in my abilities,” Clowney said. “(It can’t) just be me believing in myself. I believe in myself more than anyone. »
Clowney seemed particularly frustrated with what he perceived to be the Myles Garrett-friendly plan to put him in a better position to create sacks, and to do so at Clowney’s expense.
“I don’t even think (Garrett) realizes that,” Clowney said. “I’m not trying to say it’s him. I try to get along with everyone I play with. He and I have no problem. It’s not his fault. It’s just silly and I don’t have time. for that.”
Garrett addressed the issue Friday when meeting with reporters, saying he was surprised that Clowney was going to see the press.
“I knew he was frustrated. We’ve all been frustrated; we’re not winning,” Garrett said.
Clowney will be a free agent in March after signing two one-year contracts with Cleveland in the past two offseasons. He said there was a ’95 per cent’ chance he wouldn’t return next season, which has probably reached 100 per cent in recent days.
