Marvel Studios has made strides in bringing more diversity to the MCU over the past few years, but the introduction of more POC and LQBTQ+ characters hasn’t gone without backlash from the usual corners of the internet.

When Mexican-born Xochitl Gomez landed the role of America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she faced a fair amount of abuse online, but the trolls really turned her on. up a notch when he appeared. that America refers to its “two moms” in a flashback (Chavez is gay in the comics, but the movie doesn’t really address the character’s sexuality).

While speaking to The Wrap, Gomez was asked about the elements of toxic fandom she’s experienced since joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and revealed that she recently met Ms. Marvel star Iman. Vellani, for a dinner, where they bonded “because they were young, brown”. girls in the MCU and what it means”

“It was just nice to be able to have these shared experiences that made me feel like, OK, I’m not the only one. And especially with the harassment and the haters and all that, and being able to be like, OK, that’s not It’s not just me, it happens to you, it happens to a few other people too. But it’s like, sometimes, when it’s in the moment, you forget, and it becomes like this, what the hell happens to me?’ And it’s so much worse for brown people. Because there are layers of racism, and it’s just, it’s hard.”

“And therefore being able to speak to [Iman] and be like, you’re not the only one, and being able to show my support, and being able to take her out to dinner, and being able to change her mind, being able to release everything,” Gomez continued. “And then after being able to laugh and just say to each other, look at the conversation we just had! Look at this, they were laughing, and it’s great.”

It’s great to hear that Gomez has taken the negativity in his stride, and it’s always nice to have someone in a similar situation to confide in.

We expect to see America Chavez and Ms. Marvel share the screen at some point, but we don’t know when the former will have her returning to the MCU – although, provided she doesn’t show up before, Avengers: La Kang dynasty is probably a pretty safe bet.
