The Portuguese league game between Vitoria Guimaraes and Rio Ave was called off by the referee on Saturday after one of the away players complained to the official about racist chanting from home fans.
In the 65th minute, Rio Ave striker Emmanuel Boateng spoke to referee Andre Narciso to complain about the crowd. Narciso immediately stopped the game and went to speak to someone representing the league. Shortly after, a message was played on the AP announcer calling for an end to the chants.
In the meantime, Boateng was consoled by his teammates and even opposing players. The player decided to continue the match and it resumed in the 68th minute. The match, which had few chances, ended in a goalless draw.
It’s not the first time that Vitoria Guimaraes has been involved in a racist incident. In 2020, Guimaraes supporters sang monkey chants to Porto footballer Moussa Marega. The footballer, who now plays for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia and used to play for Guimaraes, refused to continue. Play was suspended for five minutes before the player was substituted.
