South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to the Nakedi brothers who were victims of a racist attack on Christmas Day, calling them his special guests.
He told the brothers not to fear the whites as they no longer have power over the blacks as apartheid was done.
Ramaphosa castigated racism in South Africa and promised those who perpetuate it will face the power of the law.
ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa used the opening of his January 8 speech to speak tough on racism and called the incident in which two teenagers were the victims of a racist attack in the ‘Free State.
Shortly after beginning to deliver his speech at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Mangaung, where the ANC held its 111th anniversary celebrations, Ramaphosa said young people must stand up to racism.
He said this while calling on the Nakedi brothers, whom he called his special guests, to take the stage. The two teenagers were victims of a racist attack on Christmas Day.
We thank them for still being alive. I saw one of them hit one of the men with a punch. We thank you young people and we say that what has happened to you should not discourage you. You must be strong like young men.
My message to you is that the spirit of our ancestors who fought the apartheid system should fill you with courage as it does all of us, Ramaphosa added.
The teenagers were attacked in a swimming pool at the Maselspoort complex in Bloemfontein by three white men.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, a white man is seen slapping a 13-year-old boy, who is then thrown back into the pool as he tries to get up.
The man then appears to be trying to choke the 18-year-old. Attempts to break up the confrontation failed and the situation escalated when another man pulled the hair of the young teenagers.
In his speech, Ramaphosa said what the boys had endured was cruel acts of racism and humiliation at the hands of old white men.
He added: It was such a shameful act to see old white men trying to strangle these young men and drown them in a pool under water, the most shameful act to commit against young boys like those -this. And that’s why they’re my guests.
Thanks guys for staying strong don’t be scared of the Brits [Thank you, young men, stay strong and do not fear white people]. Don’t be afraid of the whites, their time is up, and they have no more power, their apartheid is gone. Stay strong, young men, Ramaphosa said.
He also took the opportunity to thank the parents of the boys who he said stood up to racist acts and practices.
To those in our country who still want to perpetuate racism, we say today that we do not want racists here in South Africa. If you want to practice your racist tendencies, South Africa is not the place to come.
If you practice racism, we will ensure that you feel the power of the law, because the people of South Africa will never, ever again allow racism to reign in our country, as Nelson Mandela said, the father of our democracy, Ramaphosa said resoundingly. cheers from the crowd.
