Steelers draw criticism for sack celebration

Two Pittsburgh Steelers teammates face backlash for a sack celebration in Sunday afternoon’s win over the Cleveland Browns. Focusing last week on Buffalo’s defensive back and the health of Pittsburgh native Damar Hamlin after a scary scene on Monday night, DeMarvin Leal helped fellow defensive lineman Alex Highsmith after he pretended to practice CPR at the end of the 28-14 home win.

While it doesn’t seem likely that there was any intention to shed some light on the situation, the decision can be considered tasteless with what has happened recently. Given the circumstances, it’s not a good look for either player.

Hamlin collapsed on the field during a Monday Night Football game in Cincinnati and later reportedly suffered cardiac arrest. He was rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition, but showed signs of improvement and excellent neurological condition. He even tweeted to thank everyone for the support he received as he began the recovery process.

The entirety of the NFL has shown its concern and care for the University of Pittsburgh sophomore product over the past few days. Players wore shirts with Hamlin’s name and number during warm-ups, network broadcasters wore his jersey, and crowds of fans held signs wishing him well.

Highsmith had a big day for the Steelers, scoring eight saves including six solo and 2.5 sacks in a must-win clash with a division rival.

There were many other ways he and Leal could have celebrated the big game. Surely it would have been wise to read the play.
