FIA president voices criticism as F1 power struggle emerges

[ad_1]

There seems to be a major disagreement between the FIA and Formula 1 at the moment, as the addition of a new team to the grid is hotly debated between the two.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali recently told the media that the chances of the F1 grid expanding in the future are slim as Formula 1 does not want to risk the sport’s current stability by adding another team.

The statement came as bad news for Michael Andretti, who has been committed for several years to his Andretti Global project which would see him enter F1 as a newcomer.

The American has recently teamed up with American car giant General Motors and it has been announced that the company will use its luxury car brand Cadillac to lead its F1 adventure.

Despite F1’s adamant refusal to accept Andretti’s entry proposal, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem recently posted about the possibility of an 11th F1 team on social media, apparently disagree with Domenicali.

Last week the 61-year-old tweeted that he had tasked an FIA team to look into the possibility of expanding the F1 grid, and after the Andretti-Cadillac rumors were met with some dissatisfaction from the teams and current fans, the FIA president defended the American outfit.

It’s surprising that there were negative reactions to the news from @Cadillac and @FollowAndretti, Ben Sulayem wrote on Twitter.

The @FIA has been accepting applications from smaller, successful organizations in recent years. We should encourage potential F1 entries from global manufacturers like @GM and thoroughbred racers like Andretti and others.

Teams’ interest in growing markets adds diversity and broadens the appeal of @F1.

With engine regulations rewritten in 2026, it would be the ideal year for a new entrant to join F1, as evidenced by the Audi project, which will complete its takeover of Sauber at the end of the 2025 season.

With the Formula 1 sanding company on its stance and new entrants requiring FIA and F1 approval, one of the two organizations is going to have to change its mind if Andretti-Cadillac is to be allowed to enter. Formula 1 in the future.
