Tik-Tok challenge: Is it to blame for Horsham’s vehicle crimes?

[ad_1]

HORSHAM TOWNSHIP, PA The Horsham Township Police Department is warning residents to protect their vehicles after a recent theft, vehicle burglary and three vehicle thefts so far this month.

It’s unclear if recent media attention given to a Tik-Tok challenge has anything to do with the robberies, Lt. Lawrence E. Bozzomo said.

The eruption prompted a police alert about the crimes and suggestions on how to prevent them.

Last Monday, Horsham Police responded to a report of an attempted theft of a vehicle on Sherwood Lane. The resident discovered that the steering column of his Kia had been tampered with and the vehicle had been moved, police said.

Over New Years weekend three vehicle thefts were reported from an apartment complex on Dresher Road.

Police said there was no information linking the vehicle thefts to the stolen vehicles.

Residents are asked to lock their car and not leave any valuables inside.

The police also offered the following advice:

Secure your vehicle

Roll up your car windows all the way and always lock your doors.

Keep your vehicle clean

Thieves like to window shop. Avoid leaving anything visible in the car. Almost any object visible from the outside, even if you think it is worthless, can be considered valuable to a thief. Spare change, sunglasses, and even an empty bag (a thief may think there is something inside the bag) could be valuable in a thief’s mind. Never leave cash, wallets or purses in a vehicle.

Hide all electronic devices

Store your electronics and accessories out of sight or just take them with you. The evidence alone might be enough to pique thieves’ interest, including items such as power cords, adapters, and GPS windshield suction cup mounts. If you remove the suction cup, be sure to wipe off the windshield ring; it’s a dead giveaway that you own a GPS.

park smart

Park in a busy, well-lit area and avoid hiding from large vehicles, fences or foliage. Avoid parking in isolated and poorly lit places.

Report burglaries

If you see a break-in in progress, call 911 immediately. Provide the 911 dispatcher with as much information as possible, such as:

Location Provide an address, block number, or specific location in a parking lot. Description of Suspect Provide as much information as possible i.e. gender, race, age, height, weight, hair color and length, body hair color and length face, colors and style of dress and identifying marks such as tattoos and piercings. If they are fleeing on a bicycle or in a vehicle, describe the color, make, model and license plate number, if safe. Never engage or prosecute the suspect. Leave that to the police. They are trained, equipped and prepared to handle the interaction. Get more local news straight to your inbox. Sign up for free newsletters and patch alerts.
