IIU Concludes Investigation into Alleged Driving Violation by On-Duty RCMP Officer

[ad_1]

The Independent Investigations Unit (IIU) has concluded its investigation into an allegation of a traffic violation against a serving RCMP member.

On October 12, 2022, the RCMP notified the IIU of an allegation that a duty officer drove a police vehicle at excessive speed without legal justification for doing so. According to the notice, the officer was observed driving at excessive speed westbound in the town of Brandon on the Trans-Canada Highway on October 6, 2022.

The Civilian Director determined that it was in the public interest for the IIU to investigate and the information obtained by the IIU investigators included:

RCMP incident summary; vehicle condition; general reports; and video surveillance of a gas restaurant/bar.

At the conclusion of the investigation, it was determined that the available evidence was insufficient to positively identify the driver of the unmarked police vehicle. Therefore, there is no reason to support the naming of anyone as a subject agent. The testimony of the sole witness to the alleged incident was inconclusive, confusing and unsubstantiated.

Accordingly, there was no reason to pursue the investigation.

Details of the investigation were first announced on October 14, 2022.
