The White House has condemned Iran’s latest announced executions of protesters and said the United States stands with other countries in demanding an “immediate end” to death sentences.
Dozens of Iranian protesters gathered outside a prison near Tehran ahead of the impending executions of two young Iranian protesters, according to videos posted online.
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Twitter that the United States condemns the executions of Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini, along with three other death sentences announced on Monday.
“We join our partners around the world in calling for an immediate end to these abuses. Iran will be held accountable,” he said.

Mohammad Ghobadlou, 22, and Mohammad Boroughani, 19, are on death row at Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj, near the Iranian capital.
Fourteen other protesters have been sentenced to death and face imminent execution, according to Hadi Ghaemi of the Center for Human Rights in Iran.
On Monday, Canada announced a new round of sanctions after the regime’s “brutal crackdown on courageous Iranian voices”, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said.
Pope Francis has criticized Iran for its use of the death penalty against anti-regime protesters, saying it only fuels the thirst for revenge.
British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has summoned Iran’s top diplomat to condemn his country’s heinous executions.
According to Amnesty International, Iran is second only to China in the use of the death penalty, with at least 314 people executed in 2021.
Other rallies against the Iranian regime have taken place in London and Paris in recent days, as protests continue inside Iran.
