The Colts fired head coach Frank Reich after a disappointing regular start to the season, but retained general manager Chris Ballard and team owner Jim Irsay said the team wouldn’t part ways with either. him this offseason.
Irsay’s decision has drawn backlash from those who believe Ballard’s work has a lot to do with the team failing to meet its goals in recent years. Ballard met the media Tuesday for the first time since the end of the 2022 season and opened by saying he failed and his criticism is justified in his opinion of his work.
Ballard also said he believed there was an opportunity to learn from what happened and do a better job in the future.
I know there is doubt, Ballard said, via Stephen Holder of TheAthletic.com. The criticism is justified. . . But we live in a world where failure is not allowed. And did it on the biggest stage. Everyone wants your head. But if you are able to go through it and learn from it, you can reach your greatest heights.
Ballard said he will lead the search process for a new head coach, but Irsay will make the final hiring decision. That’s what happened with interim head coach Jeff Saturday, who Ballard confirmed would be a candidate for the permanent position. He wouldn’t do the same with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, and the Colts have made several more interview requests since the end of the regular season.
