A day after The Menu was released on HBO Max, Noma, the fine dining establishment widely regarded as the best restaurant in the world, announced that it would be closing its doors.
Chance? Some fans don’t think so.
Noma, a Copenhagen-based restaurant, announced on Monday that it will officially close its doors at the end of 2024. Chef and founder Ren Redzepi explained that the reason for the closure was because the high demand for fine dining n was more durable.
“We have to completely rethink the industry,” Redzepi said. “It’s just too hard.”
The New York Times reported that Redzepi’s announcement follows a revelation within the elite restaurant industry.
“The decision comes as Noma and many other elite restaurants face intense scrutiny over their treatment of the workers, many of whom are poorly paid or not paid at all, who produce and serve these exquisite dishes,” the report said. “The style of gastronomy that Noma helped create and promote around the world, extremely innovative, labor-intensive and extremely expensive, could suffer a sustainability crisis.”
The renowned chef shared that the elite restaurant industry needs a major overhaul in the way it treats workers, who are often not paid enough for their art, which was highlighted in the recently released movie, The Menu.
The satirical film centers on a young couple (played by Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) who visit an exclusive destination restaurant on a remote island where the acclaimed chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a sumptuous tasting menu, along with shocking surprises. We won’t reveal the chef’s secrets, but that is to say that his plan is not viable either.
And of course, Twitter did what Twitter does best: crack a ton of jokes. After the news broke, many pointed out that The Menu was likely the real reason for Noma’s closure. We have to say they raise a good point.
On the heels of The Menu’s release, it’s almost satirical, but I can’t believe Noma will finally be shut down https://t.co/KUFFp9kdFa

Am I the only one who thinks it’s unlikely that Noma announced the shop closing soon after the menu was released?
