The region’s top political leaders are throwing their support behind the Penticton Indian Band after some signs on the reservation were defaced with racist graffiti last weekend.
The signs, which are now replaced, were located on Green Mountain Road and were intended to alert drivers that they were on GDP land and should obey community rules.
There is no doubt that this disgusting act is a hate crime and has generated much renewed anger and pain throughout our community. Since this morning, more signs have been discovered vandalized with more hateful and racist graffiti, Chief Greg Gabriel said in a news release Tuesday afternoon in the city of Penticton.
All local governments must send a strong message that this type of racist ugliness will not be tolerated and must be condemned. Our GDP signs can be replaced, but the ugliness of this type of racism will live on in our community for generations.
The release also included quotes from Julius Bloomfield, Mayor of Penticton; Mark Pendergraft, Okanagan-Similkameen Regional District Chair; and Supt. Brian Hunter of the Penticton RCMP.
It was an act of hate-motivated vandalism. We don’t know if it was one person or a few, whatever, it’s not representative of who we are as a community, Hunter said.
We have zero tolerance for racist, derogatory or hateful comments and are fully investigating this incident. As a community, we seek to move forward with compassion and understanding and speak out against racism at every opportunity.
