A problem that caused a brief outage to 911 across much of the state is believed to be due to a technical issue with an Upper Peninsula router, a 911 manager in Michigan’s northern county said.
The outage prevented callers from speaking to 911 dispatchers for about an hour at various 911 dispatch centers.
During the outage, supervisors at these centers instructed people in emergencies to dial local emergency numbers.
Grand Traverse 911 County Manager Jason Torrey said he received notifications that a technical issue with a router in the Upper Peninsula was causing the problem.
He said the router was isolated and apparently taken out of service. Other routers then began to function properly, allowing 911 service to be restored.
Torrey said a 911 network provider in the Upper Peninsula should look into what happened and issue a report. The supplier, he said, should also give details of how it will prevent a widespread outage from happening again.
