Israel’s new restrictions against flying the Palestinian flag are a “brazen attempt to legitimize racism”, rights group Amnesty International said on Tuesday.

Israel’s new National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Sunday ordered the police commander to allow officers to remove Palestinian flags waving in public spaces.

“I have ordered the Israeli police to enforce the ban on flying a PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) flag in public spaces as a sign of identification with a terrorist organization,” Ben wrote. -Gvir on Twitter.

“We will fight terrorism and supporters of terrorism with all our might,” he added.

Amnesty called these new measures “repressive” and “a bold attack on the rights to nationality, freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly”, in a statement sent to AFP.

In Israel and annexed East Jerusalem, Israeli security forces are already confiscating Palestinian flags, sometimes sparking violence.
