Family members and activists continue to seek justice and information about the October shooting death of 13-year-old Sinzae Reed.
The latest: With an ongoing investigation, city council members heard criticism Monday about Columbus’ treatment of Sinzae’s family following the shooting.
A timeline:
October 12: Sinzae, who was black, is fatally shot at Hilltop’s Wedgewood Village apartments, the city’s 111th homicide of 2022.
Sinzae’s obituary states that he enjoyed listening to music, playing video games, and spending time with friends.
October 13: White Wedgewood resident Krieg Butler, 36, is arrested in the case. Bail is set at $1 million.
A witness reported seeing Butler get out of a truck, fire his gun at Sinzae and flee the scene, according to court records. It is not known if Butler and Sinzae knew each other.
October 20: Franklin County District Attorney Gary Tyack dismisses the case, after Butler allegedly claimed self-defense.
November 29: A 14-year-old girl is injured in another shooting in Wedgewood.
December 17: Suleeman Abdi, 25, is shot dead in the compound.
WBNS-TV reports that the city has already spent much of 2022 urging the owners of the complex to make necessary safety improvements. 17 homicides have been reported in Wedgewood since 2017.
Late December/early January: Sinzae’s death draws attention on social media and national media.
January 1: Family members demand Butler’s arrest, Tyack’s removal as prosecutor and a federal hate crimes investigation.
January 9: City leaders acknowledged critics for not providing Sinzae’s family with the usual trauma counseling and not informing them that Butler would be released from prison.
What’s next: The police department says it’s awaiting “key forensic and ballistic evidence” to turn over to the county attorney.
Tyack left open the possibility that charges would then be presented to a grand jury.
