Colleen Hoover Responds to ‘It’s Ends With Us’ Coloring Book Review

Colleen Hoover has said she asked her publisher not to publish a coloring book based on her domestic violence novel after it was criticized on social media.

Hoover is the bestselling author of novels like “Verity” and “Ugly Love.”

She reported that she got her start as a self-published author, but Hoover is now best known for her book “It Ends With Us,” which was published by Atria Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. Over 4 million copies have been sold since the book was released in August 2016.

Its sequel, “It Starts With Us,” was Hoover’s biggest debut yet when it was released in October 2018, according to USA Today. “It’s Ending With Us” is also being made into a movie by Justin Baldoni, who starred in “Jane The Virgin,” according to Variety.

On Tuesday, Hoover announced that she would be adding another project to the “It Ends With Us” universe: a coloring book inspired by the novel, which will be released in April. According to the coloring book’s Amazon page, the 30 included illustrations bring “It Ends With Us” “most iconic scenes and settings” to life, as well as memorable quotes from the novel.

“I’m one of the biggest consumers in the adult coloring book industry, so turning one of my books into a coloring book is a dream come true,” Hoover captioned his post. ad on Instagram, which has since been removed. “I’M SO EXCITED FOR THIS! But social media users weren’t as excited about the project as the author, with many criticizing the decision to turn the novel into a coloring book because of its subject matter. “It Ends With Us” is largely about domestic violence; the main character, Lily Bloom, and her mother deal with domestic violence in the story.

Social media users quickly filled in the comments section of Hoover’s post, questioning his choice to create the coloring book.

Representatives for Hoover and Simon & Schuster did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

“That’s so gross. Why make a book about literal abuse something as light as a coloring book?” a user wrote.

Another said Hoover was “romanticizing a toxic, dv relationship.”

Book lovers have also taken to TikTok to voice their grievances over the project, with many saying they feel the coloring book sheds light on domestic violence.

A TikTok user who described herself as a former Hoover fan said she was “disappointed to say the least” with the project and hoped the coloring book would not end up being published. His video has been viewed almost a million times on Wednesday.

Another TikTok user posted about the project, saying, “A coloring book? A coloring book about a novel whose central theme is domestic violence, and you all want me to take it seriously as an author. ?”

The TikTok user added that the video was “beyond tone deaf” in his caption. The video had already garnered more than a million views on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Hoover shared on her Instagram Story that she had asked her publisher not to publish the coloring book following the backlash she received to its announcement.

“The coloring book was developed with Lily’s strength in mind, but I can absolutely see how tone deaf it was,” Hoover said in the statement.

“I hear you guys and I agree with you. No apologies. No finger pointing,” she continued. “I contacted the publisher to let them know that I would prefer that we not move forward.”

“Thank you for the respectful speech and accountability. Nothing but love,” Hoover added.

Atria Books also removed its coloring book announcement post on Wednesday, although the product’s Amazon page was still live at the time of publication.
