Many Sebastian residents say their yards are flooded due to the “sloppy engineering” of building new homes. They want to take their complaints to the city council meeting on Wednesday evening.
Newer homes are on higher ground, which existing homeowners say is causing significant runoff into their yards and, in some cases, damage to their properties.
The discussion has been heated on social networks in the hope of finding a solution to the problem.
“This is a VERY SERIOUS ISSUE, resulting in thousands of dollars in expense for already established homeowners, through no fault of their own,” a Sebastian resident wrote on social media.
These owners are looking for a solution to the problem because they are paying to fix a problem that they believe was caused by the new builder. As city officials hear these ongoing complaints, they are working to develop solutions.
“This is a significant problem for many of us, and it’s important to understand that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. That being said, we are working diligently to find solutions. These solutions can include builders, existing owners and the city,” Deputy Mayor Chris Nunn told Sebastian Daily.
Nunn also explained that landlords have private property rights, so if there is no violation, the town of Sebastian cannot force a neighbor to change the way their property drains water. It’s a tough problem to solve, and the answers aren’t easy, Nunn said.
According to Wednesday night’s agenda, City Council will discuss stormwater codes related to the construction of new homes adjacent to existing properties. If there are new codes, the municipal authorities can apply them.
There is still a problem with the current damage to homes caused by new construction. But, again, it can be a dispute between the owners, the builder or the insurance company.
Some property owners have told us that discussing the problem with the city council is a step in the right direction, but they wonder who is responsible for the damage already caused by the runoff.
