Kumail Nanjiani is a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to his role as Kingo in Eternals, but that doesn’t mean he’s in an uproar over directors like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino criticizing the ongoing film franchise.
I obviously like the movies Tarantino does or Scorsese does, Nanjiani recently told Esquire magazine. And I may disagree with Scorses’ opinion on superhero movies, but I mean, who else has earned the right to have an opinion?

Nanjiani added: If Scorsese hasn’t earned the right to have an opinion about movies, then none of us should have an opinion about movies. It’s so weird that people get angry.
Scorsese sparked the fury of Marvel fans in October 2019 when he told Empire magazine, I don’t see [Marvel movies]. I tried, you know? But this is not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, no matter how well done, with actors doing their best under the circumstances, is theme parks. It’s not the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.
Scorsese later clarified that his review of Marvel had nothing to do with quality and everything to do with exposition. The Oscar-winning actor worried about how the dominance of Marvel and comic book movies keeps smaller films from showing in theaters. Francis Ford Coppola backed up Scorses’ claims and said Marvel movies lack risk.
Nanjiani saying that Scorsese has earned the right to criticize Marvel echoes similar statements made by Jon Favreau immediately after Scorsese and Coppolas’ original comments. Favreau kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe by directing Iron Man and Iron Man 2. He also has a recurring role in the franchise as Happy Hogan.

These two guys are my heroes, and they’ve earned the right to voice their opinions, Favreau told CNBC at the time. I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing if they didn’t make their way. They served as inspiration, you can trace it back to Swingers. They can express whatever opinion they want.
As for Nanjiani’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s still waiting for the studio to call him about the Eternals sequel.
I would love to come back,” Nanjiani recently told Total Film magazine. But I’m kind of waiting to find out when or if it’s going to happen. I hope I can do more. I had a great time playing this character. It would be a shame if he was one kind and done. But, you know, the decisions are not mine.
Nanjianis’ performance in Eternals is now available to stream on Disney+.
