Nathan Jones says he’s not bothered by criticism despite response to Paul Doswell’s jibe

Southampton manager Nathan Jones insists he is not listening to public criticism as he took issue with perceived negative questions ahead of Saturday’s relegation battle at Everton.

Jones lost his first four Premier League games amid fan unrest but improved the mood at St Marys as he guided Saints to a 2-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Manchester City after reaching the fourth round of the FA Cup.

After upsetting Pep Guardiolas’ side on Wednesday night, the former Luton boss used his press conference on Thursday to express his irritation at recent comments from Havant & Waterlooville manager Paul Doswell, a Southampton fan, claiming that he was overwhelmed.

The bottom-of-the-table Saints travel to Goodison Park on Saturday, where the sentiment among fans is arguably even gloomier, with Frank Lampards Toffees also languishing in the bottom three.

I really ignored it all and I don’t want it to be a big deal because some are justified, some aren’t,” Jones said of the reviews.

I really took umbrage at one thing (Doswell’s comments). When you’re in the public eye and doing a job like managers do, you’re going to get some criticism no matter what you do at all levels.

It has nothing to do with thick skin or not, I think I’ve held myself with real dignity for the past few weeks and hopefully now.

I can’t hear it. I was informed of an incident, that’s all. I don’t read social media, I don’t read much of the press. I block everything. I have a narrow view trying to do a job for Southampton.

Back-to-back cup wins over City and Crystal Palace should give Southampton a major morale boost ahead of the trip to Merseyside.

Everton fans are planning a sit-in protest after the weekend game, during which there will be calls for owner Farhad Moshiri to change the structure of the board and remove the long-time chairman. date Bill Kenwright and general manager Denise Barrett-Baxendale.

The story continues

Asked about the prospect of both sets of fans expressing their displeasure, Jones replied: You have very negative questions. Let’s focus on the performance levels we were doing.

I can’t comment on Frank Lampard or Everton Football Club. What I can say is Southampton and we have a wonderful football club here.

Yes they (the fans) are a little unhappy but hopefully changing perceptions, over time we will change perceptions and that’s it.

I can’t comment on Merseyside fans or anyone else and I don’t care about their fans, I only care about myself.

Having also beaten League One Lincoln in the Carabao Cup since joining, Jones defended his overall record.

Take away the Liverpool game (a 3-1 loss) because I had one day (to prepare) I’m at 50% win rate per minute, he said.

I lost three Premier League games, won all the cup games.

I need to improve my ratio in the Premier League and if I can do that the criticism will stop.
