Florence Pugh says people didn’t like her dating Zach Braff because he wasn’t a successful young movie star.

The Don’t Worry star Darling, 27, talks about her hot career in Vogue’s winter issue. It includes a conversation about her upcoming film, A Good Person, an independent project written and directed by Braff, 47, from whom she split in 2022. She tells the magazine the breakup is “still new” and discussed the criticism they faced over their 21-year age gap.

“We weren’t in anybody’s face,” she said of herself and Braff, who she started dating in 2019 after casting her in a short and getting close. as they quarantined together during the pandemic. “People just didn’t like it. They imagined me with someone younger and someone in blockbusters.”

The Little Women actress continued, “I think young relationships in Hollywood are so easily twisted because they feed gossip sites. It’s exciting to watch. And I think I was in a relationship that did none of that.”

Pugh went on to say that “the breakup was very new” and that she’s still figuring out what’s next in many aspects of her life. For example, she recently bought her first home in London, which will be her home base, but she’s trying to figure out if she needs a place in Los Angeles after sharing Braff’s until last year. . It is noted in the story that she referred to Braff’s kitchen, where she would do her “Cooking With Flo” pandemic videos, as “her cooking” in conversation. She called her garden “her garden”.

Braff, who last week called Pugh a ‘legend’ in a birthday tribute, was widely quoted in the feature, not discussing their relationship or criticism of her, but talking about her performance in A Good Person, which comes out in March. Pugh plays a pharmaceutical saleswoman who is about to get married but is involved in an accident that kills family members of her fiancés. During her recovery, she abused opioids, resulting in a full-fledged addiction. Pugh is producing the film and has been involved in many other aspects, from casting and script revisions to writing the music her character performs.

The story continues

“I just think she’s one of the greatest actresses of her generation,” Braff praised her ex in Vogue. “She’s just magnetic. You can’t take your eyes off her. And it’s not just her beauty and it’s not just her acting ability, it’s that thing, that magical thing that transcends the screen, where everyone goes: I want to see whatever that person is doing.”

While Braff wrote the role of Pugh for her, he said the story was partly inspired by Amanda Kloots. During the pandemic, when Braff and Pugh holed up at his Los Angeles property, the guesthouse was occupied by his best friend Nick Cordero, Kloots and the couple’s infant son, who had moved from New York and performed renovations to their Los Angeles home. Of course, as the tragic story goes, the Broadway actor contracted COVID and was hospitalized for months before dying in July 2020.

“I really wanted to write about how we as humans, no matter how tough things get, we pick ourselves up,” Braff said of The Talk host.

Looking back on those times, he recalls, “Our property became ground zero for Amanda. So many amazing human beings passed by, and they walked her baby so she could have just one hour of solitude. Florence was doing pizzas and brought them to her. And we were scared of COVID, of course. So she would sit on the front porch and we would sit on a bench six feet away. It was a very, very , very intense, and we couldn’t even comfort Amanda well. Of course, we fell apart and just said, fuck, and hugged her.”

Pugh said Cordero helped her feel at home in Braff’s circle, saying he “made everyone feel good about my relationship with this group of friends and this life, Nick was so much a part of it.” The couple held Corderos’ memorial service in their vegetable garden.

But it’s no longer their backyard and Pugh has spoken of putting down roots in London. She recently bought a house in the city that has always felt like home. Now, several months after her breakup, it was the right time.

“For years, because I was so busy, it made no sense for me to rent accommodation in London as I hardly ever came home,” she said. “I was literally going from job to job, living out of a suitcase. When I came back, I just wanted to see my family and friends anyway. So I just stayed with my family and friends.

She chose South London because she has several friends there from high school and is already planning her first dinner and next act.

“You know, you have a daydream when you start: What does it mean you did it? What does it mean you’re an adult?” she said. “For me it was: you live near your friends and you have a local pub. And because I didn’t do that when I was young, because I didn’t go to university, that meant that in all my years of adult work and my years of adulthood living abroad, I still hadn’t, in my mind, put all the pieces together.”

Now she’s ready for the chapter, noting that having lived in LA longer than anywhere else in her adult life, she’s always considered herself “more of a London girl.”
