The controversial tweets that landed Waymond Wesley under fire were posted in 2015 and 2016 from a now-deleted account.
A Houston-based TikTok chef posted photos of his meals in hopes of boosting his following, but instead started gaining notoriety for remade remarks he made on Twitter about women black with dark skin.
Waymond Wesley, known as Chief Way on the video-sharing platform, has also served as a prosecutor with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office since March 2021, according to The Houston Chronicle.
The controversial tweets that put him at the center of the backlash were posted in 2015 and 2016 from the @WaymoTheGod account, consisting of derogatory comments about black women’s bodies and appearances.

Wesley took to his social media to respond to the offensive words, even after deleting the offensive account and remarks, saying he was deeply sorry and blaming alcoholism for his behavior.
It was a time in my life where I was sick in more ways than one, Wesley shared, The Chronicle reported. Cooking saved me. You have seen an imperfect man heal, who will continue to heal and learn. Thank you for being along for the journey.
Wesley’s public apology comment sections on Instagram and TikTok are disabled. However, on Twitter, where comments are enabled, replies to posts and retweets are filled with people mocking Wesley’s apology and how he claimed cooking could change his outlook.
Chef Way has over 250,000 followers on TikTok and numerous sponsorships with food companies.
KPRC Click2Houston reported that Wesley appears to have lost a brand partnership due to the resurfaced tweets. Stephen Svajian, general manager of Anova Culinary, shared via Twitter that they were immediately cutting ties with Wesley because he was not following company principles. A subsequent tweet from the Anova Culinarys account announcing the chiefs’ dismissal states We hope our former partner has a few moments of deep soul-searching and makes the strides needed to become an anti-racism ally. Hate has no place at Anova and we remain committed to listening to marginalized voices and deeply valuing diversity.
The story continues
Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a statement Tuesday that she supports Wesley. Although she believes the remarks from nearly seven years ago were inappropriate, offensive and did not represent her values or those of the AD office, Ogg said, she believes in second chances.
Mr. Wesley explained that these posts came during a period when he was struggling with serious personal issues, including alcohol addiction, Ogg said, KPRC2 reported. Prior to joining our office, Mr. Wesley underwent treatment and worked with the Texas State Bar to resolve his issues. His recovery is in progress. I believe in second chances and Mr. Wesley has conducted himself in a professional manner since joining our team. I am convinced that this will continue.
TheGrio has reached out to Wesley for comment.
AD office communications director Joe Stinebaker said they were unaware of the now-deleted account or its contents before the backlash, The Chronicle reported. He said the bureaus background checks included analysis of active and public social media accounts.
Stinebaker added that Wesley is continuing his work as the prosecutors office carefully investigates all allegations of bias against an employee.
